Granted, Hardy's use of "the dynasts" as supernatural beings pushing and pulling around the historical personages as nothing more than stick figures is a tad hard to swallow at times, but even that has some parallel with Tolstoy's concluding chapters in "War and Peace" on the nature of history, without necessarily any "supernatural" undertow/5(15).
